The INDEX OF AMERICAN DESIGN was a WPA survey of early American decorative and folk art. A collaborative archival art project that utilized dozens of watercolor artists to create realistic portraits of objects deemed important to American history.

Zack here, owner of American Objects. The Index of American Design is, in my opinion, the greatest collection of art the United States government has ever created. It's a true glimpse into American history through her objects. Not only historic objects, but how the government, artists, museums and collectors saw American history in the 1930s and 1940s. The parallels between what was deemed an important historic object then and now are fascinating, especially given American Objects' business of procuring, protecting and offering very similar pieces. I'm thankful that these artworks are made available by the NGA and I am excited to share my favorites and make them into tangible pieces of art. I hope to be able to continue on the mission and the legacy that the Index of American Design began 90 years ago.
